When is the best time to book for maternity?

When is the Best Time to Book a Maternity Photoshoot?

This is one of the most common questions I’m asked — and the answer actually has two parts.

1. When Should You Book Your Maternity Session?

The best time to secure your maternity photoshoot is at the end of your first trimester, or early in your second.

By this stage, you’re past those early uncertain weeks and can start planning ahead with confidence. Booking early also ensures you have access to your preferred dates — especially if you’re hoping for a weekend session or a specific timeframe.

Many clients are surprised at how quickly my calendar fills, particularly during peak seasons, so planning ahead means one less thing to think about later in your pregnancy.

2. When Should the Session Take Place?

The ideal time to photograph your maternity session is between 30–34 weeks.

At this stage:

  • Your baby bump is beautifully round and well-defined

  • You’re still generally comfortable enough to move and pose with ease

  • It’s early enough to avoid the unpredictability of the final weeks

Every pregnancy is different, of course — so this timing can be adjusted slightly depending on how you’re feeling and whether you’re expecting multiples.
