Best Time for Maternity Photos

Pregnancy is such a special and exciting stage in life, and maternity photos are the perfect way to celebrate this beautiful journey before your baby arrives. One of the most common questions I get asked as an Auckland maternity photographer is:

“When is the best time to book maternity photos?”

The ideal time for maternity photos is usually between 30–35 weeks pregnant. During this stage, your bump is beautifully round and visible, while most mums are still feeling comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the session.

At  Racheal Trail Photography, I specialise in timeless studio and outdoor maternity photography close to my south Auckland studio, helping expecting mums feel confident, beautiful and relaxed during their session.

Why 30–35 Weeks Is Ideal

Every pregnancy is different, but for most women, 30–35 weeks is the perfect balance between:

  • having a nice prominent baby bump

  • still feeling relatively comfortable

  • reducing the risk of baby arriving early before your session

Many mums start feeling more tired and uncomfortable after 35 weeks, especially during summer Auckland weather. Booking earlier also allows more flexibility with session dates.

What If I’m Having Twins?

Twin pregnancies often show much earlier and can become more physically demanding sooner. For twin maternity sessions, I usually recommend booking between 28–32 weeks.

Studio or Outdoor Maternity Photos?

I offer both studio and outdoor maternity photography in Auckland.

Studio maternity sessions are perfect for

  • elegant timeless portraits

  • dramatic lighting

  • privacy and comfort

  • couture gown looks

Outdoor maternity sessions are beautiful for:

  • golden sunset light

  • flowing gowns

  • natural family moments

  • beach or nature settings

Some clients even choose a combination of both studio and outdoor images with my Deluxe collection.

Do You Provide Maternity Gowns?

Yes! I have a large client wardrobe available for mums to wear during their maternity session, including a beautiful range of couture maternity gowns designed specifically for photography.

This means you don’t need to stress about buying expensive dresses just for your photoshoot.

Can My Partner and Children Join?

Absolutely. Partners and children are always welcome to join your maternity session. Including your family helps create meaningful images celebrating this exciting chapter together before baby arrives.

When Should I Book My Session?

I recommend booking your maternity session during your second trimester if possible, especially if you’re wanting weekend availability.

This gives enough time to plan your session and secure your preferred date before my calendar fills up.

If you’re currently looking for an award-winning Auckland maternity photographer, I’d love to hear from you.
