How to Prepare for Your Maternity Photoshoot

Preparing for your maternity photoshoot can feel exciting and a little nerve-wracking at the same time, especially if you’ve never had professional photos taken before.

The good news is that your session doesn’t need to feel stressful at all.

At  Racheal Trail Photography, my goal is to make your maternity session feel relaxed, comfortable and enjoyable while creating timeless images you’ll treasure forever.

When Should I Book My Maternity Session?

The ideal time for maternity photos is usually between 30–35 weeks pregnant.

This is when:

  • your bump is beautifully round

  • you’re still relatively comfortable

  • there’s less risk of baby arriving early before your session

I recommend booking during your second trimester where possible, especially for weekend sessions.

What Should I Bring?

You don’t need to bring too much to your session.

I provide a large collection of maternity gowns and fabrics for clients to wear during their photoshoot.

You may also wish to bring:

  • nude underwear

  • strapless bra

  • black underwear

  • water/snacks

  • simple jewellery

  • comfortable shoes for outdoor locations

Should I Get Hair and Makeup Done?

Professional hair and makeup can help many mums feel extra confident during their session, but it’s completely optional.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and like yourself.

Fake Tan and Skin Prep

If you choose to get a spray tan, I recommend having it done a few days before your session so it settles naturally.

It’s also a good idea to:

  • moisturise your skin

  • drink plenty of water

  • avoid tight clothing before your session to reduce skin marks

Don’t Worry About Posing

One of the biggest worries mums have is:

“I don’t know how to pose.”

Please don’t stress.

I guide you throughout the entire session, helping with:

  • posing

  • hand placement

  • angles

  • movement

  • expression

My goal is to create natural and flattering maternity portraits while helping you feel relaxed and confident.

Can My Partner and Children Join?

Absolutely. Partners and children are always welcome to be included in your maternity session.

These family moments often become some of the most meaningful images from the session.

Enjoy the Experience

Maternity photography is about celebrating this incredible stage of motherhood before your baby arrives.

Take the opportunity to slow down, enjoy the moment and create memories you’ll treasure forever.
