What Happens During a Studio Newborn Session?

If you are preparing for your first newborn photoshoot, it is completely normal to feel a little nervous or unsure about what to expect.

One of the most common things parents say before their session is:

“What actually happens during a newborn session?”

As an Auckland newborn photographer, my goal is to make the experience feel calm, simple, and fully guided from start to finish.

Newborn Sessions Are Baby-Led

Every newborn session is paced around your baby.

There is never any rushing, and plenty of time is allowed for:

  • feeding

  • settling

  • changing

  • comforting baby

Some babies sleep deeply throughout the session, while others need a little extra soothing, both are completely normal.

The Studio Is Warm and Comfortable

Newborn sessions are kept warm and cosy to help babies stay sleepy and comfortable.

Everything needed for the session is provided, including:

  • wraps

  • blankets

  • props

  • posing fabrics

  • accessories

Parents and Siblings Are Welcome

Depending on your collection, parents and siblings can also be included in the session.

These family images are often some of the most meaningful photographs from the entire gallery.

How Long Does a Newborn Session Take?

Most newborn sessions last between 1–2 hours depending on:

  • feeding needs

  • settling time

  • sibling participation

  • the style of session booked

There is always flexibility to work at your baby’s pace.

Best Age for Newborn Photos

Newborn photos are ideally photographed within the first 7–21 days after birth while babies are still naturally sleepy and curled up.

However, beautiful images can still absolutely be captured with older newborns too.
