What Is a Milestone Photography Session? | Auckland Baby Photographer

Your baby changes so much during their first year.

After the tiny newborn stage, there comes a beautiful period when their personality really begins to shine through. They start smiling more, interacting with you, reaching for things around them and, eventually, learning to sit independently.
This is where a milestone photography session comes in.
Milestone sessions are designed to capture your baby during one of these rapidly changing stages, preserving all the little expressions, details and personality that are so easy to forget as they grow.

What Is Milestone Photography?

Milestone photography focuses on documenting an important stage in your baby’s development after the newborn period.
Rather than concentrating on sleepy newborn poses, milestone sessions are much more about your baby’s personality and the things they can do at their current age.
Depending on their stage, this might include:

  • Sitting independently

  • Tummy time

  • Playing with their feet

  • Reaching for toys

  • Laughing and smiling

  • Showing all of those wonderfully serious expressions

  • Crawling or beginning to pull themselves up

Every baby develops differently, so milestone photography isn’t about your baby reaching a particular achievement by a particular date.
It is simply about capturing who they are right now.

What Age Is Considered a Milestone Session?

Milestone sessions can take place throughout your baby’s first year, but one of the most popular stages is once baby can sit independently.
For many babies, this happens somewhere around 6–9 months, although there is absolutely no need to worry if your baby reaches this stage earlier or later.
The most important thing is that they can sit safely and comfortably without needing constant support.
Some families also choose milestone photographs slightly earlier during the tummy-time stage, while others wait until baby is closer to their first birthday.
There isn’t one perfect age.
If you’re unsure whether your baby is ready, I’m always happy to help you decide based on what they are currently able to do.

Why Is the Sitting Stage So Beautiful to Photograph?

The sitting stage is one of my favourite ages to photograph because babies are often incredibly expressive at this point.
They are still very much babies, but their personalities are beginning to become much more obvious.

You might see:

  • Huge gummy smiles

  • Curious expressions

  • Cheeky little grins

  • Serious concentration

  • Excitement when Mum or Dad appears

  • Hands reaching for everything nearby

Sitting independently also gives us lots of variety without needing a complicated setup.
We can photograph baby sitting, lying down, playing, interacting with simple props and capturing all the tiny details that make this stage unique.
And because many babies aren’t yet confidently walking, they generally stay in one area for just long enough for us to create a lovely variety of photographs.

What Happens During a Little Moments Session?

My Little Moments Session is designed specifically for babies and younger children.
The session lasts approximately 30 minutes, which is usually plenty of time for this age without becoming overwhelming.
When you arrive, we don’t need to rush straight into taking photographs.
Some babies are immediately happy to smile at a stranger with a camera.
Others need a little time to look around, stay close to Mum or Dad and work out exactly what is happening.
Both are completely normal.
We’ll work at your baby’s pace and gradually introduce them to the setup.
Once they are comfortable, I’ll guide the session while allowing plenty of room for their natural expressions and personality to come through.

A Styled Backdrop and Simple Setup

Little Moments Sessions include one styled backdrop, carefully designed to complement your baby rather than overwhelm them.
I prefer setups that keep the focus on your child.
Simple colours, textures and carefully chosen props allow us to create something beautiful while still making sure your baby’s face and personality remain the most important part of the photograph.
Depending on the setup, we may also incorporate a small stool, basket, soft toy or other simple element where appropriate.
The goal isn’t to surround baby with props.
It is to create a finished, polished look while keeping the photographs timeless.

Client Wardrobe Options

You will also have access to suitable pieces from my client wardrobe.
Having wardrobe options available can take some of the pressure out of working out what your baby should wear.
I keep the clothing neutral and photographic so it works beautifully with the studio styling and doesn’t distract from your baby.
You’re also very welcome to bring an outfit of your own.
If you have something special you’d love photographed — perhaps a favourite outfit, knitted piece or something with sentimental meaning — we can absolutely incorporate that as well.

Can We Include Lifestyle Photographs Too?

Depending on your baby and the style of photographs you love, we can also include some softer lifestyle-style images during your Little Moments Session. These might be relaxed photographs on the bed, playful moments with baby, or a few photographs with Mum or Dad.
It gives us another way to capture your baby’s personality and your connection together, while still keeping the session relaxed and baby-focused.

What If My Baby Is Shy?

This is incredibly common.
Babies don’t understand that they’ve arrived for a photoshoot, and they certainly don’t know that we would quite like them to smile on command!
Some babies need a little extra time before they feel comfortable.
We might let them sit with Mum or Dad first, play with a familiar toy or simply give them a few minutes to observe their surroundings.
Parents are also very useful behind the scenes.
Sometimes the biggest smiles happen because Mum is singing a favourite song, Dad is making a ridiculous noise behind me, or someone is playing peekaboo just outside the frame.
And your baby doesn’t have to smile in every photograph.
Those curious, thoughtful and serious little expressions are just as much a part of who they are at this age.

How Many Photographs Are Included?

My Little Moments Session includes 8 professionally edited images.
After your session, you’ll be able to choose your favourites from your gallery.
Each selected photograph is then professionally edited in my signature style before your final images are delivered.
The session is intentionally kept simple and focused so we can create a beautiful, varied little gallery without asking your baby to stay engaged for an unnecessarily long period of time.

How Are Milestone Photos Different From Newborn Photos?

Newborn and milestone sessions capture two completely different stages.
Newborn photography is about those fleeting first weeks — tiny fingers, sleepy expressions, curled-up poses and just how incredibly small your baby once was.
Milestone photography captures what comes next.
Your baby is now beginning to interact with the world.
They recognise familiar people.
They smile, laugh, grab their toes, reach for things and show you more and more of their personality every day.

That is what makes milestone photographs so special.

When you eventually look back at photographs from your baby’s first year, the newborn images will remind you how tiny they were.
The milestone photographs will remind you who they were becoming.

Behind the Scenes to the Finished Photograph

One of the things I love showing families is how a simple studio setup becomes the finished photograph.

The studio doesn’t need to be filled with elaborate props to create beautiful photographs.
A carefully styled backdrop, flattering light and your baby’s personality are often all we need.

This is also why capturing a little behind-the-scenes footage during a real Little Moments Session can be so much fun — you get to see the ordinary moments happening around the camera and then the finished photographs created from them.
Ready to Capture This Stage?
Your baby’s first year moves incredibly quickly.
The sitting stage, the gummy smiles, the little hands reaching for everything and those wonderfully expressive faces won’t stay exactly the same for long.
A milestone session gives you the opportunity to preserve this stage before the next one arrives.
