How Old Should Your Baby Be for Newborn Photos?
One of the most common questions I get asked is: when is the best age for newborn photos?
If you’re searching for the best age for newborn photos in Auckland, the short answer is, earlier than you think.
The ideal window: 7–21 days
The best time to photograph your newborn is within the first 7–21 days after birth.
During this stage, babies are:
Sleepier
Naturally curled
Easier to gently pose
Less sensitive to movement
This allows for those calm, timeless images my sessions are known for.
Why timing matters
As babies grow, they become:
More alert
More sensitive to being moved
Less likely to stay settled in wrapped or posed setups
This doesn’t mean you’ve “missed your chance” it just means the session may look slightly different.
What if your baby is older?
If your baby is over 3 weeks old, don’t stress.
I regularly photograph babies up to 6 weeks old, especially with:
Wrapped setups
Relaxed, baby-led posing
In-home sessions
You still get beautiful, natural images, just with a slightly more awake feel.
What about premature babies?
For premature babies, we work with corrected age, not birth date.
This means we can still capture those sleepy, curled poses, even if baby is technically older.
Final thoughts
The earlier you book, the easier it is to secure a session within that ideal window.
But no matter your baby’s age, your session will always be calm, guided, and tailored to your baby.
