When is the best time to book for maternity?

Auckland Maternity Photography Guide

When Is the Best Time to Book Your Maternity Photoshoot?

Pregnancy is such a beautiful chapter, but knowing when to organise your maternity photographs can feel a little confusing.

Should you book as soon as you find out you're pregnant? Is 30 weeks too early for photographs? And what happens if you've left it until the final few weeks?

One of the most common questions I'm asked is when to book maternity photography in Auckland.

There are actually two important dates to think about: when you reserve your session and when you step in front of the camera.

Here's how I recommend planning your maternity photography experience so you can enjoy it without feeling rushed.

My Recommended Timeline Book Early. Photograph at 30–34 Weeks.

Ideally, reserve your maternity session towards the end of your first trimester or early in your second trimester, then plan your photographs for approximately 30 to 34 weeks of pregnancy.

Step One / Reserving Your Date

When Should You Book Your Maternity Photographer?

I recommend booking towards the end of your first trimester or early in your second trimester.

That might seem early when your baby bump is only just beginning to show, but booking ahead gives you more choice of available dates and time to plan the session you'd really love.

It's especially helpful if you have a particular weekend in mind, want to include your partner or children, or are hoping for outdoor photographs.

01 / More Choice

Secure Your Preferred Date

Booking ahead gives you a better opportunity to choose a session date that suits your pregnancy and family schedule.

02 / Time to Plan

Explore Your Options

You'll have time to think about gowns, studio backdrops, outdoor locations and the style of photographs you'd love.

03 / Less Pressure

One Less Thing to Organise

With your session arranged, you can enjoy the months ahead without worrying about finding a photographer at the last minute.

Step Two / Your Photoshoot

How Many Weeks Pregnant Should You Be for Maternity Photos?

For most expectant mums, I recommend having maternity photographs taken between 30 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.

By this stage, your baby bump is usually beautifully rounded and defined, making it a lovely time to celebrate your pregnancy.

You're also more likely to feel comfortable moving between poses and enjoying your session than you might in the very final weeks.

Of course, every pregnancy is different. The ideal timing will depend on how you're feeling, how your pregnancy is progressing and what your maternity care provider recommends for your circumstances.

30–32 Weeks

A Lovely Balance

Your bump is generally well defined, while you may still feel comfortable standing, moving and enjoying different poses.

32–34 Weeks

Beautifully Rounded

These weeks can be especially lovely for showing off your bump, provided you're feeling comfortable and well.

The best time for your maternity photographs is when your bump is beautifully visible and you still feel comfortable enough to enjoy the experience.

Every Pregnancy Is Unique

What If You're Expecting Twins or Need an Earlier Session?

If you're expecting twins or multiples, or there are reasons your baby may arrive earlier, it may be better to schedule your maternity photographs sooner.

There's no need to feel that you must wait until 30 weeks simply because it's my usual recommendation.

I'm happy to discuss an earlier photography date so that we can plan around your circumstances, comfort and medical guidance.

Likewise, if you're already further along and haven't booked yet, it's still worth getting in touch. I can let you know what dates are available and whether a session is practical for you.

What If I Don't Feel Confident in Front of the Camera?

You don't need to know how to pose, and you certainly don't need previous photoshoot experience.

I guide you through the positioning of your hands, your posture and the little adjustments that help create flattering maternity portraits.

My goal is for you to feel comfortable, beautifully looked after and able to enjoy this special experience.

Should You Choose a Studio or Outdoor Maternity Photoshoot?

Both styles can create beautiful maternity photographs, but they offer slightly different experiences.

Studio photography gives us carefully controlled lighting, a selection of backdrops and a timeless, elegant look.

Outdoor maternity photography offers natural surroundings, soft textures and the opportunity for beautiful movement in flowing gowns.

My Mini and Classic maternity collections are studio-based, while Deluxe includes studio and nearby outdoor photography.

If you have your heart set on a particular outdoor setting, it's worth mentioning it when booking so we can discuss what is possible within your collection.

A Beautiful Experience for You You Don't Have to Do It All Alone

Your partner and children are welcome to join your maternity photographs. It's a lovely opportunity to capture your family's excitement before your newest little member arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Booking Maternity Photography in Auckland

Is 28 Weeks Too Early for Maternity Photos?

Not necessarily. Although I usually recommend 30 to 34 weeks, 28 weeks can be a lovely option if your bump is showing well or an earlier session is more comfortable for you.

Is 36 Weeks Too Late?

Not always, but I generally prefer to photograph maternity sessions earlier. By 36 weeks, you may feel less comfortable, and there is less flexibility if your baby arrives sooner than expected.

Do I Need to Bring My Own Maternity Dress?

No. You'll have access to my studio maternity gown wardrobe, so there's no need to purchase a special dress just for your photographs.

Can My Partner and Children Join?

Yes. Partners and children are welcome, and I'll guide everyone through the photographs so you can enjoy the experience together.

How Far Ahead Should I Reserve a Weekend?

As early as possible. Weekend availability is limited, so booking during your first or early second trimester gives you a better chance of securing a suitable date.

Can I Book Newborn Photography at the Same Time?

Absolutely. You can plan your maternity and newborn photography together. A $100 saving is available when maternity photography is booked with my Signature or Legacy in-home newborn collection, with the discount applied to the newborn session.

A Moment Worth Remembering

Don't Wait Until Your Pregnancy Is Almost Over

Pregnancy can feel as though it lasts forever while you're living through it, but looking back, those months become such a small and special part of your family's story.

Your maternity photographs are a chance to celebrate everything your body is doing and the little life you're waiting to meet.

With over eight years specialising in maternity and newborn photography, I love helping expectant mums feel confident and beautiful in front of the camera.

Whether you're only just starting to plan or you're already approaching your third trimester, I'd love to help you create something beautiful.

One day, these photographs will remind you of the beautiful anticipation before everything changed.
