When to Book a Newborn Photographer (Best Time for Newborn Photos)

Auckland Newborn Photography

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photographer?

One of the questions I'm often asked is, "When should I book my newborn photoshoot?"

Many parents assume they need to wait until their baby arrives, but the best time to organise newborn photography is actually during pregnancy, ideally in your second trimester.

Booking ahead gives us time to plan your beautiful newborn portraits, with flexibility for whenever your little one decides to arrive.

Planning Your Session

Why Is It Better to Book Before Baby Arrives?

Those first days with a newborn are precious, exciting and sometimes a little overwhelming. Having your photography organised beforehand means one less thing to think about.

01 / AVAILABILITY

Secure Your Place

I take a limited number of newborn bookings each month so I can allow flexibility around babies arriving earlier or later than expected.

02 / PREPARATION

Everything Is Planned

We can discuss the photography style you love, whether you'd like family portraits and which collection is the best fit for you.

03 / PEACE OF MIND

Relax After Birth

Once your baby arrives, you can focus on your family rather than trying to find an available newborn photographer at the last minute.

Your Due Date

But What If Your Baby Arrives Early or Late?

That's Absolutely Fine!

Babies have their own ideas about when they're going to arrive, and I certainly don't expect them to follow a calendar.

When you book through my website, simply use your estimated due date as your booking date.

Once your little one arrives, let me know and we'll organise the actual photography session around their arrival and my available dates.

If your baby arrives prematurely or requires extra care, we'll discuss an appropriate time for their session based on their individual needs.

The Newborn Stage

When Will the Photographs Actually Be Taken?

Booking your session during pregnancy is different from when we photograph your baby.

For my fully posed in-home newborn photography, I generally recommend the first 7 to 21 days after birth. This is often a lovely stage for those curled-up newborn poses.

Different Sessions for Different Families

  • In-Home Posed Newborn: Beautifully styled, posed portraits during baby's first 7 to 21 days.
  • Wrapped Studio Newborn: Shorter, beautifully styled sessions for babies approximately 1 to 6 weeks old.
  • Guided Lifestyle Newborn: Relaxed, natural photographs in my South Auckland studio, ideal for capturing family connection.

Not sure which style suits your family? I'll happily help you choose.

Book through my website using your estimated due date. Your booking secures a place in my newborn calendar.

03

Welcome Your Baby

Once your little one arrives, get in touch and we'll confirm a suitable date for your newborn photographs.

A little planning now means more time to enjoy those precious first days later.

A Little Extra Flexibility

Have You Considered a Split Newborn Session?

If you love beautifully posed newborn photographs but would prefer a little more time before having family portraits, my split-session option may be perfect.

Two Sessions, One Beautiful Story

With my Signature and Legacy In-Home Newborn Collections, I can photograph your baby at home during their first few weeks.

We then meet again approximately 2 to 4 weeks later at my South Auckland studio for beautiful photographs with Mum, Dad and siblings.

It's a lovely way to give Mum a little extra recovery time, with access to my studio client wardrobe for your family photographs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What If You Haven't Booked Yet?

I'm Already in My Third Trimester. Is It Too Late?

Not necessarily! Please get in touch. If I have availability around your due date, I'd be delighted to photograph your baby.

My Baby Has Already Arrived. Can I Still Book?

Absolutely, you're welcome to enquire. I'll check my availability and help you choose a suitable session for your baby's age.

Do I Need to Know the Exact Session Date?

No. Your estimated due date is all we need initially. The actual session date is organised once your baby has arrived.

Yes! Family portraits are included with selected newborn collections. We can also plan a split session if you'd prefer your family photographs a little later.
