Best Time During Pregnancy for Maternity Photos

One of the most common questions expecting mums ask is:

“When is the best time to take maternity photos?”

As an Auckland maternity photographer, I generally recommend booking your maternity session between 30–35 weeks of pregnancy.

This timeframe is usually ideal because your bump is beautifully visible while you are still comfortable enough to move and pose easily during the session.

Why 30–34 Weeks Works Best

During this stage of pregnancy:

⭐️ your bump has a lovely round shape

⭐️ most mums are still reasonably comfortable

⭐️ swelling is often less severe

⭐️ movement is easier

⭐️ there is less risk of baby arriving early before your session

⭐️This timing also allows flexibility in case your baby decides to arrive earlier than expected.

Is 36 Weeks Too Late?

Not necessarily.

Every pregnancy is different.

Some mums still feel amazing at 36–37 weeks, while others may feel more tired or uncomfortable earlier.

If you are further along and still hoping for maternity photos, it is always worth reaching out to see what availability remains.

When Should You Book Your Maternity Session?

I recommend booking your maternity session during your second trimester whenever possible.

This helps secure availability, especially during busy seasons.

Many families also choose to book both maternity and newborn photography together while planning for baby’s arrival.

What If You Are Having Twins?

Twin pregnancies often photograph best slightly earlier, usually around 28–32 weeks, as bumps tend to grow faster and comfort levels can change earlier.
