From a beautiful 30-minute wrapped session to a fully posed newborn experience in your own home, every session is designed around your baby and the photographs you'd love to create.
One of the questions I'm often asked by expectant parents is how long they should allow for their newborn photography session.
The answer depends on the type of photography you choose, whether family photographs are included and how your little one is settling on the day.
At Racheal Trail Photography, I offer three different newborn photography experiences: professionally posed in-home sessions, studio wrapped newborn photography and Guided Lifestyle newborn sessions at my private Drury studio.
Each experience is a little different, so here's what you can expect.
Newborn photography isn't something I rush. Feeding, changing, cuddles and settling are all part of working with a tiny baby, and I always work around their comfort.

Beautifully Simple Sessions From 30 to 60 Minutes
My studio wrapped newborn sessions are perfect for families who would love beautifully styled newborn photographs without a longer traditional posed session.
Your baby remains wrapped throughout the photography, allowing me to create a lovely variety of portraits with minimal disruption.
These sessions take place at my private photography studio in Drury, South Auckland, with three collections to choose from.

Why Are Wrapped Sessions Shorter?
Because your baby stays wrapped, there are fewer transitions between outfits and traditional posed setups. This allows me to create beautiful newborn photographs within a shorter, more focused session.
A Relaxed Family Experience, Usually 60–90 Minutes
My Guided Lifestyle newborn sessions offer something a little different from traditional posed newborn photography.
These sessions take place in my dedicated studio lifestyle area in Drury and focus on the beautiful connection between your baby and the people who love them.
Think gentle cuddles, natural interaction, relaxed family portraits and those lovely moments together.
Although the photographs have a natural feel, I still guide you throughout the session, so there's no need to worry about knowing how to pose.
I generally allow approximately 60 to 90 minutes, giving us time to create beautiful family photographs while allowing for your baby's needs.

In-Home Newborn Sessions Take Around 2 to 2½ Hours
My professionally posed in-home newborn sessions are designed for families who love beautiful, traditional newborn portraits but would prefer the convenience of staying home.
I bring professional lighting, posing equipment, wraps, fabrics and carefully selected props directly to your Auckland home.
This isn't simply a lifestyle session on your couch or bed. I create professionally styled and carefully posed newborn photographs using a dedicated setup in your home.
Although these sessions involve more detailed posing and styling than my wrapped collections, they're still a relatively efficient experience.
Most in-home newborn sessions take approximately 2 to 2½ hours at most.
This allows time for beautiful posed baby portraits, family photographs where included and the occasional feeding or settling break.
There's no need to set aside an entire day for your photographs.

Split Newborn Sessions: Around 2 Hours at Home
One of the options I offer with my Signature and Legacy in-home collections is the ability to split your newborn and family photographs into two separate visits.
This can be especially helpful if you're recovering from birth, have older children or simply don't feel ready to get everyone organised for family portraits during those first newborn weeks.
With a split session, I photograph your baby at home first.
The baby-only in-home portion generally takes approximately 2 hours.
Then, around two to four weeks later, you can come to my private Drury studio for the family photographs.
It means your newborn photography can be completed without trying to fit all the family photographs into the same morning.
Enjoy approximately 2 hours of professionally posed newborn photography at home, followed by a separate, shorter studio visit for your family portraits. Available with Signature and Legacy collections.
A little breathing room for new parents, without missing those beautiful family memories.
What Can Affect the Length of a Newborn Session?
Although each collection has an expected duration, babies don't always follow a predictable routine.
Some settle quickly, while others need a little more time and reassurance.
These are some of the things that can influence how smoothly the session flows.
Feeding
Some babies need extra feeds or comfort breaks during their photographs.
Settling
Every baby is different in how quickly they relax and settle into posing.
Family Photos
Including parents and siblings requires a little additional time and organisation.
Setups
Traditional posed setups involve more preparation than simple wrapped portraits.
Why I Never Rush a Newborn Session
Newborn photography requires patience, and rushing rarely helps anyone.
A baby who needs feeding, changing or comforting isn't being difficult. They're simply communicating what they need.
My approach is always to work with your baby rather than expecting them to follow a strict photography schedule.
Some poses may be possible when your baby is settled and comfortable, while others might not suit them on the day.
That's perfectly normal, and I'm always happy to adapt.
The aim is to create beautiful photographs while keeping the experience calm and positive for your little one.
Your baby's comfort will always be more important than achieving a particular pose.
How Can You Help Your Newborn Session Run Smoothly?
There's no need to do anything complicated before your session.
Follow your baby's usual feeding and sleeping cues rather than trying to keep them awake beforehand.
Have your normal feeding and changing essentials nearby, and choose comfortable clothing for yourself if you're joining the photographs.
For in-home posed sessions, please send me any specific prop, colour or posing requests at least 48 hours beforehand so I can prepare the equipment and styling items to bring.
Most importantly, don't worry if your baby needs extra cuddles or isn't sleepy when I arrive.
That's all part of photographing newborns.
A Gentle Reminder About Outfit Changes
I usually keep outfit changes to a minimum during newborn photography because repeated changing can unsettle babies. A beautiful variety of portraits can still be created using thoughtful posing, wraps and styling.

My professionally posed in-home newborn sessions generally take approximately 2 to 2½ hours at most, depending on the collection and your baby's needs.
How Long Does a Split Newborn Session Take?
The initial baby-only in-home session usually takes around 2 hours. Family photographs are then taken during a separate studio visit approximately two to four weeks later.
What If My Baby Won't Sleep?
That's absolutely fine. I can adjust the setups, use wrapping where appropriate and create beautiful awake portraits when your baby is comfortable.
Do You Offer Shorter Newborn Sessions?
Yes. My studio wrapped newborn collections are 30, 45 or 60 minutes, depending on which collection you choose.
