Choosing a newborn photographer is one thing, but choosing what type of newborn session you want can be another. Some families love the idea of staying at home while I bring the newborn setup to them, while others prefer the simplicity of coming into the studio for a shorter wrapped session. Both options can create beautiful newborn photographs, and the best choice simply depends on the type of experience and gallery you are hoping for.
What Is an In-Home Newborn Session?
An in-home newborn session means I bring the professional newborn photography setup to your home, including posing equipment, wraps, blankets, props and everything needed to create polished newborn portraits without you having to travel with a brand-new baby. In-home sessions are particularly lovely for families who want a calm and convenient experience during those first few weeks after birth.
Can You Still Get Posed Newborn Photos at Home?
Yes. An in-home newborn session does not have to mean only lifestyle photographs on the bed or cuddles on the couch. I can create carefully posed newborn portraits in your home using the same professional approach I would use in a studio setting. As long as there is enough suitable space for my setup, we can create a beautiful variety of posed baby photographs right inside your home.
What About Lifestyle Newborn Photos?
One of the lovely advantages of an in-home session is that we can also include relaxed lifestyle photographs if you would like them. These might include baby being cuddled by Mum or Dad, photographs with siblings, quiet family moments or images taken in a meaningful area of your home. This gives you the option of combining polished posed newborn portraits with natural family photographs within the same experience.
What Is a Studio Wrapped Newborn Session?
My studio wrapped newborn sessions are designed for families who want a shorter, more streamlined newborn experience. Baby remains wrapped throughout the session, helping keep things simple while allowing us to create a beautiful selection of newborn portraits without the longer settling and posing time involved in a full newborn session. Depending on the collection you choose, your session can be baby-only or can also include parents and siblings.
Why Choose a Wrapped Studio Session?
A wrapped session can be a great option if you love simple, polished newborn portraits but do not need a large variety of unwrapped poses. Because baby remains wrapped, the session is generally shorter and more focused, making it a lovely choice for families who want beautiful newborn photographs without committing to a longer in-home session.
Which Option Is Better for Family Photos?
If including parents and siblings is important to you, both options can work beautifully. In-home sessions naturally lend themselves to relaxed family photographs while still allowing for more posed family portraits, and my Wrapped Full and Wrapped Full Plus studio sessions can also include parents and siblings. The biggest difference is the overall feel, with photographs at home often feeling more personal and lifestyle-focused while studio family photographs have a cleaner, more controlled look.
Which Option Is Better if I Have Other Children?
This really depends on your family. For some families, having the session at home is easier because older children are in a familiar environment and can take a break, play or have a snack when needed. For others, a shorter studio wrapped session is more appealing because the overall session time is reduced. There is no single right answer — it comes down to what will make the experience easiest and most enjoyable for your family.
Which Option Gives Me More Variety?
If you are looking for the greatest variety, an in-home newborn session will usually give you more options. Depending on your chosen collection, we can include posed baby photographs, different setups, family images and lifestyle photographs. A studio wrapped session is intentionally more focused, with baby remaining wrapped throughout and the session designed around a smaller, beautifully consistent collection of images.
Which Option Is Better if I Want a Shorter Session?
If keeping the session short is a priority, a studio wrapped newborn session is likely to suit you best. My wrapped sessions range from approximately 30 to 60 minutes depending on the collection, while in-home newborn sessions require more time for setting up equipment, feeding and settling baby, posing and creating a wider variety of photographs.
What If I Am Not Sure Which One to Choose?
Think about the photographs and experience you are naturally most drawn to. If you love posed newborn portraits but also want relaxed family images and the convenience of staying home, an in-home newborn session may suit you best. If you love simple wrapped portraits, would prefer a shorter session and are happy to travel to the studio, a studio wrapped newborn session may be the better option.
