Artificial intelligence is changing the world of photography, but when it comes to capturing your baby and your family, I believe there's something irreplaceable about a photograph that was genuinely taken.
At Racheal Trail Photography, every image begins with a real moment in front of my camera. A real baby, real parents, beautiful lighting and the time and care that go into creating a professional photograph.
I don't use generative AI to invent babies, recreate family portraits or place my clients into imaginary scenes.
I want the photographs you receive to reflect your family, not an artificial interpretation of it.
The photographs I deliver are created from images I've genuinely captured during your session. Professional editing enhances those photographs, but it doesn't replace the experience of creating them.
What Is AI-Generated Photography?
Generative AI can create convincing images of people, places and situations that never actually existed in front of a camera.
It can generate a newborn photograph from a description, create an imaginary background or produce an entirely new image based on an existing photograph.
The results can look impressive, but they raise an important question when you're investing in family photography.
Are you looking for a beautiful image, or a beautiful photograph of something that was genuinely captured?
For me, those are two very different things.
Creating Something That Wasn't Photographed
Generative AI can invent details, surroundings or entire scenes that weren't present during a photography session.
An image might appear realistic even though the moment itself never happened.
Creating From Real Photographs
I photograph your baby and family using real setups, professional lighting and carefully guided posing.
The finished images are professionally edited photographs from your actual session.
There's So Much More to Newborn Photography Than Pressing a Button
Beautiful newborn photography involves much more than having a good camera.
Before I take a photograph, I'm thinking about the lighting, the position of your baby, the colours and textures, the angle of the camera and the overall composition.
During an in-home newborn session, I bring professional photography equipment, wraps and carefully selected props to your home. I create the setups and photograph your baby there, rather than generating a studio scene afterwards.
In my South Auckland studio, the same care goes into my wrapped newborn and guided lifestyle photography.
Real Styling
I choose wraps, fabrics, props and colours that complement your baby and create a timeless look.
Real Posing
I carefully guide and position babies according to their comfort, always working around their individual needs.
Real Editing
I professionally edit the photographs I've captured to create a polished, consistent final gallery.
The artistry happens during the session, not just afterwards on a computer.
Does That Mean I Don't Edit My Photographs?
Not at all. Professional editing is an important part of my photography, and something I've spent years refining.
There is a big difference between editing a photograph and generating an entirely new image.
Every photograph in your finished gallery receives professional attention. That may include colour adjustments, skin retouching, refining the lighting or removing small distractions.
I also sometimes combine elements from multiple photographs taken during the same session. For example, I might use the best expression from one photograph or combine moments from a flowing maternity gown toss.
These techniques use real photographic material I've captured, rather than inventing a scene that never existed.
What My Professional Editing Can Include
Skin retouching: Gently refining temporary blemishes, redness or distractions while keeping skin looking natural.
Colour and lighting: Adjusting tones, contrast and sometimes backdrop colours to achieve a cohesive finished image.
Photographic composites: Carefully combining elements from genuine photographs taken during the session where appropriate.
Personalised finishing: Making selected refinements to help your photographs look polished while still looking like you.
My editing style is about enhancing the photograph I've taken, not replacing your baby or family with something artificial.
Why Authenticity Matters So Much in Newborn Photography
Your newborn is only this tiny for such a short time.
Those delicate eyelashes, little fingers, soft cheeks and tiny expressions change so quickly. They're details you'll want to remember long after your baby has grown.
When I photograph your newborn, I want to preserve what makes them uniquely yours.
I don't want to replace their real features with an artificially generated version of what a computer thinks a newborn should look like.
Even when I create beautifully styled posed photographs, the baby in the photograph is your baby, photographed by me.
Real Newborn Posing Is Always Baby-Led
Newborn photography requires patience, care and an understanding that every baby is different.
Some babies settle beautifully into a particular position. Others prefer being wrapped, held or photographed in a simpler setup.
I work around the baby in front of me rather than expecting every newborn to fit a particular pose.
Where a photograph requires combining separate real exposures, editing can help create the finished result without expecting a baby to hold an unsuitable position.
The goal is always beautiful photography created with your baby's comfort and wellbeing in mind.
Your baby's real features and tiny details are already beautiful. They don't need to be invented.
The Experience Is Part of the Memory Too
Something I think is easily overlooked when talking about AI-generated images is the experience of actually having your photographs taken.
During a maternity session, there's the excitement of trying on gowns, watching beautiful fabric move and celebrating your growing bump.
During a newborn session, there are those tiny stretches, sleepy expressions, feeding breaks and beautiful moments between parents and their baby.
And during family photographs, there are the cuddles, little smiles and connections that can't be planned perfectly.
Those moments are part of the story behind the finished photograph.
When you look back at your images years from now, you're not simply looking at something beautiful. You're remembering a real time in your family's life.

Do You Use AI to Create Newborn Backgrounds?
No. I don't use generative AI to invent newborn scenes or replace your baby's surroundings with imaginary backgrounds. I photograph real setups and professionally finish the images afterwards.
Are Your Portfolio Photographs Real?
Yes. My portfolio features photographs created from actual photography sessions. They are professionally edited, but they begin with real photographs I've taken.
Do You Retouch Maternity & Newborn Photos?
Absolutely. Professional retouching is part of my finished photography. I can refine skin, lighting, colours and other details without generating an entirely new image.
Can You Use AI to Create a Different Photo of My Baby?
No. I don't offer AI-generated recreations of your baby or family. My finished images are created from the photographs taken during your session.
